Vancouver Public Schools Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Tutor 11668-2023 in Vancouver, Washington

This position is temporary, Funded through the 2023-24 school year. It is also part-time, and will not exceed 19 hours a week.

We are looking for applicants to work in small groups with middle and high school students in innovative AVID programs in the Vancouver School District. They will assist students in math, reading and general study skills in order to achieve their full potential. Tutors must be proficient in high school core content subjects and eager to help students get to college! Tutors work with AVID students in study groups assisting them in all academic areas. Tutors use Socratic questioning and collaborative learning techniques to help the students come up with the answers to their questions on their own and by working with fellow students. Experience as an AVID tutor would be advantageous for those considering or pursuing a career in education.

Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in high school or possess a high school diploma

  • Current enrollment in college coursework preferred

  • Must be at least 16 years old

  • Experience which demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and a team player attitude

  • Experience which demonstrates strong organizational skills

  • Ability to effectively communicate with and appreciate individuals from diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, parents, business and community groups and/or other members of the public

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Be positive and professional at all times

  • Responsible and self-motivated

  • Ability to work flexible hours

  • Ability to arrive on time and prepared for tutorial

  • Ability to dress professionally for work

  • Possess reliable transportation to and from work

Other Requirements:

  • Complete 16 hours of tutor training

  • Complete background clearance requirements

  • Inform AVID elective teacher in advance of absences/tardies on a tutorial day

  • Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements

Essential Functions:

  • Treat co-workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times

  • Serve as a role model/mentor to AVID students

  • Take and active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students

  • Facilitate the tutorial learning process and implement AVID methodologies

  • Assist students in the successful completion of college eligibility requirements

  • Provide academic support for students in rigorous courses

  • Encourage students to enroll in a four-year college or university after high school graduation

  • Become familiar with the specific routines and expectations of each Avid teacher’s classroom

  • Adhere to district/site policies and procedures Work in a flexible and cooperative manner

  • Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as assigned

Benefits/Compensation:

Salary range: New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range. However, employees who have verified prior years of service in a similar occupational status from other Washington School Districts or Education School Districts, may receive experience credit towards salary placement. Benefits: Employees who are anticipated to work at least 630 hours may be eligible for health, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, life, and disability insurance benefits. Time Off: Vancouver Public Schools offers paid holidays and paid time off, including but not limited to, sick, vacation, personal, and bereavement leave.

  • Sick Leave: 8 hours per month (part-time employee accrual will be proportionate to their FTE).

  • Personal Leave: 3 days per school year

  • Twelve (12) month full-time Pro Tech employees are eligible to accrue ten (10) days vacation at one (1) - five (5) years of service. The accrual days are incrementally improved by five (5) days at the completion of five (5), eleven (11) and twenty (20) consecutive years of service respectively.
