The Credit Underwriting Team Lead will be responsible for reviewing and underwriting loan requests to help the bank build, maintain, and accurately risk grade its solid credit portfolio. This will involve working closely with analysts, underwriters, portfolio managers, credit administration, and chief credit officers. Team Leads are responsible for developing junior talent through coaching, mentoring, and reviewing the work of their team. Underwriters own the recommendation phase of new loan requests.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead (as a player/coach) the underwriting efforts for new commercial loan requests and perform periodic reviews on existing commercial loans

  • Identify, evaluate, and implement efficiencies within the underwriting and closing function

  • Mentor, train, and coach credit underwriters to ensure a consistent credit culture

  • Review underwritten loan requests and source information for consistency and opportunities for improvement within the underwriting team

  • Collaborate with Credit Administration to further develop team members, templates, and processes

  • Create credit underwriting memos which analyze the credit request, the borrower, financial and credit information, repayment sources, risks and mitigation, collateral, and compliance with applicable regulations and policies

  • Analyze and document loan modification requests

  • Be knowledgeable of policies, guidelines, procedures, regulations and systems applicable to the credit function

  • Ensure that loan files and documentation are complete

  • Make, recommend, and present credit decisions to credit administration and credit committee through both effective written and verbal communication

  • Assess and recommend risk ratings for underwritten loans

  • Assist with portfolio management and monitoring

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with internal and external clients

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience analyzing business and personal financial statements associated with loan requests

  • 7+ years of experience underwriting commercial loans, including commercial real estate loans

  • 2+ years of experience managing, mentoring, leading, training credit underwriters

  • 3+ years of experience making or recommending credit decisions on transactions > $5 million

  • 3+ years of experience underwriting commercial real estate loans, reviewing loan documents, and managing a portfolio of commercial real estate loans

  • 3+ years of experience working in credit or lending role with a commercial bank

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a formal commercial credit training program

  • Experience working out problem loans. We don’t have many, but the experience makes better lenders
